1957Braves 1957 Season Player ratings (Board version)
$49.95
This was the last year before the Dodgers and Giants headed west and a road trip out west meant a train trip to St. Louis. The final year of the glory days of NY baseball when the NY Yankees, NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers produced another pennant for the Bronx Bombers. Lead by MVP Mantle (.365 BA, 34 HR, .665 SLG), Yogi Berra and Bill Skowron and AL ERA leader Bobby Shantz, the Yanks held off a determined White Sox club that featured singles, stolen bases and strong pitching. Luis Aparicio, Nellie Fox and Minnie Minoso lead the guerilla attack, while Billy Pierce (20-12) and Dick Donovan were the aces of the hill staff. Boston featured AL batting champ Ted Williams (.388 BA) who flirted with .400. Washington had it's hero in Roy Sievers (42 HR, 114 RBI) who won both the HR and RBI titles, but the Senators still finished last. The Milwaukee Braves became World Champions in one of the great World Series, besting the Yanks in seven games. Milwaukee was lead by MVP Hank Aaron (44 HR, 132 RBI) the HR and RBI leader along with slugger Eddie Mathews (32 HR). The Big Three pitching staff of Warren Spahn (21-11, 2.69 ERA), Lew Burdette and Bob Buhl was only bested by the Brooklyn staff that featured Don Drysdale (2.69 ERA), Johnny Podres (2.66 ERA), Don Newcombe and a 21 year old by the name of Sandy Koufax. Brooklyn still had it's core hitting stars of Gil Hodges (.299 BA, 27 HR), Duke Snider (40 HR) and Roy Campanella, but Brooklyn settled for 3rd place. St. Louis challenged Milwaukee for the Pennant with it's great star and batting leader Stan Musial (.351 BA, 29 HR, .612 SLG). Cincinnati featured 21 year old Frank Robinson (.322 BA, 29 HR). New York's Giants were lead by the phenomenal Willie Mays, who lead the league in both SB and 3B while also providing tremendous power and defense in cf. Mr. Cub ss Ernie Banks (43 HR), had a terrific year, but the Cubs finished a dismal 7th.
